Super Mario Bros. Bob-omb Movie Prop Explodes My Nostalgic Little Heart

by Mike

“…Bob-omb!”

Behold! The best movie prop from the worst video game movie: the only known surviving Bob-omb from 1993′s Super Mario Bros., obtained from a crewmember who worked on the film.

‘Tis The Season For Giving: 5 Prototypes 5 Days Before Christmas

by Mike

I’m happy to report that the Intro to Protos feature is achieving its goal in helping to open up the prototype world to more people.

One of these new aficionados, who wishes to remain anonymous, sent me five NES prototypes to look at and document. (Click on the carts for more information.)

First, a prototype of the surprisingly solid unlicensed Christian game, Spiritual Warfare, which is chock-full of differences.

Little Samson may just be one of the biggest sleeper hits on the NES, and the game also makes for a pretty interesting prototype.

This first-party Nintendo prototype of Wario’s Woods is anything but “final,” but I have yet to find out what exactly is different.

Next up is Romstar’s Thunder & Lightning. Unfortunately, this proto is the same as retail, so I have only uploaded the following photos for archiving purposes: Front Cart / Back Cart / Front PCB / Back PCB

Bringing up the rear is Impossible Mission, another prototype identical to the released game: Front Cart / Back Cart / Front PCB / Back PCB

The Process That Goes Into Creating In-Game Artwork

by Mike

It has always been a dream of mine to own an original piece of video game art. Thanks to ex-id Software employee, Paul Jaquays, that dream has now become a reality.

If you’re as big a fan of Quake III Arena as I am, or you just want to learn more about the process that goes into creating in-game artwork, you owe it to yourself to check out the full article.

Two Turtle Doves And A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles NES Prototype

by Mike

I haven’t had much luck with the Turtles’ prototypes, but that doesn’t stop me from still trying. Will this NES beta of their very first video game outing, Konami/Ultra’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, finally turn the tide? Or will I get nothing but coal again? Read the article to find out once and for all if there really is a Santa Claus.

Cowabunga to all, and to all a good night!

Former Disney Game Producer Talks Capcom, Disneyland, Salad

by Mike

Former Disney game producer Darlene Lacey speaks about her experiences while working on Adventures in the Magic Kingdom for the NES.

My deepest thanks to Darlene for being such a joy to interview!

It’s A Bird… It’s A Plane… It’s A Superman Famicom Prototype!

by Mike

Brent “Skrybe” Adams purchased this Superman Famicom prototype from Yahoo Japan Auctions for 10,500 yen. He asked me to check for differences. Here’s what I found.

Following the Trail of Cracker Crumbs: The Origins of Sonic Crackers

by Mike

Let us pretend for a moment that this site was not a love letter to Nintendo. For this post, and this post only, SEGA does what Nintendon’t.

Sonic Crackers has been rumored to be many things: an April Fool’s hoax, a complex homebrew project, the long-lost Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

So, what’s the real story behind Crackers? With some estimates going as high as 15 or more known copies, where did all of these first-party Genesis prototypes originate? And would I seriously be crazy enough to buy a copy based solely on the absurd title alone?

For answers to these questions and more, you will have to read the article.

I’m suddenly dying for a chili dog.

Donatello Does Machines, I Do Movie Props (That’s A Fact, Jack!)

by Mike

Just a quick update to the ever-expanding TMNT feature: I’ve added a new movie prop to my collection, Donatello’s bandana!

This purple fabric knot makes up part of Donatello’s bandana worn by Leif Tilden in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. The knot was salvaged by one of the “turtle dressers” after filming wrapped. The eye mask part would have been glued onto the foam latex head.

My kingdom for the foam latex head of Donatello!

The Tale Of The Possessed NES: A Real Ghost Story

by Mike

The Halloween Countdown is sadly coming to a close. The vampires are full of Bloody Marys and passed out on top of ouija boards. The undead are settling back down into their graves. And here, at Nintendo Player, the little ghoulies are sitting by the campfire ready to hear a real-life ghost story… The Tale of the Possessed NES!

My thanks to Mark Keyes, Director of The Pennsylvania Paranormal Association, for his help with the article.

Bonus: Ghosts do exist. You just have to know where to find them. Use the included Nintendo Spirit Guide to help you get started with conducting your own gaming ghost hunt this Halloween weekend!

Something Strange In Your Neighborhood? Must Be The New Ghostbusters II Unreleased USA Prototype.

by Mike

Halloween is almost upon us. My favorite time of the year is escaping like so many colored leaves from their trees. To raise the spooky stakes in these final days of October, I’ve written about a New Ghostbusters II unreleased USA prototype.

Well, “unreleased” in the sense that the retail game came out only in Japan and Europe. Besides the NTSC-US region code, the prototype has a few other interesting differences. See the article for more details.

Busting makes everyone feel good!

Come back again before the 31st to catch the thrilling conclusion of NP’s Halloween Countdown: a real-life Nintendo ghost story!
